CHAONS
Cosmic Voyager, mixed media (spray paint, ink, oil, sugar). Artist's collection and private collection 2013-2016.
In Cosmic Voyager (Traveler of the Universe), Christophe Chaons presents his most figurative work. The prism bursts forth in an explosion of color, moving slightly away from abstraction and closer to surrealism. Splashes of color are improvised using a variety of techniques and a mix of media: spray paint, ink, paint, paper, canvas… Cosmic Voyager evokes the narrative journey of an explorer with astronomical visions. This traveler embodies both the artist and the viewer of the work, wandering from planet to planet until he finds his own world. This symbolic protagonist is searching for his harmony, for his origins. The artist himself projects himself into this character of the traveler of the universe, seeking his origins, “both human and cosmic,” in an existential quest, the quest for self. His series of works evokes the search for a father figure, symbolized by a quest for an extraterrestrial race. As an “anthropologist-artist,” Christophe Chaons is fascinated by the biological mysteries of the Unknown, drawing on ancestral theories about the strange and unexplained phenomena of life to inform his creations. For him, these are gateways between science and the imagination, whose parallels he enjoys depicting through his visual art.
